17TH ANNUAL ART AT THE CAPITOL EVENT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Honolulu, Hawaiʻi – On Friday, April 17, the Hawaiʻi State Capitol will come alive as a vibrant hub of art, music, dance, and film for the 17th Annual Art at the Capitol. This free, family-friendly event invites the public to explore artwork displayed throughout Capitol hallways, discover creative pieces featured in legislative offices, and connect with their legislators.

Hosted by Representative Jeanne Kapela and Senator Chris Lee, this event is a collaboration between the Hawaiʻi State Legislature and the Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA)’s ‘Arts in Public Places’ program.

This year’s theme, “Urban Canvases; Culture in Motion,” highlights the evolution of the Hawaiian art renaissance through hip-hop and streetwear. The evening will feature special performances by Ballet Hawaiʻi, the Hawaiʻi Youth Symphony, and Fam.ily Dance Company, along with music by DJ Nate and a variety of local food vendors. Additional programming includes poetry readings, art exhibits in legislative offices, film screenings in the Senate and House chambers, cultural activities, slam poetry, and a kōnane and chess tournament.

4:00 p.m. – Opening Remarks (Capitol Rotunda)

4:25 p.m. – Performances (Rotunda, Governor’s Office, Lieutenant Governor’s Office)

6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. - Self-guided tours (various offices)

Capitol Security Measures

Visitors are encouraged to arrive early to allow extra time to go through security checkpoints and metal detection screening. There are three entry points: Two at street level (elevator Cores 1 and 3) which are located at the Diamond Head makai and ʻEwa mauka corners of the State Capitol Rotunda, and one at the main basement entrance. A photo ID is required to enter the building.

Limited paid public parking is available at the Capitol, with the entrance via Miller Street off Punchbowl. Additional public parking is available at nearby lots including the Ali‘i Place building, Kalanimōkū Building, Kīna‘u Hale/Department of Health, Honolulu City Municipal Parking, and metered street parking in the area. Residents are also encouraged to carpool, use public transportation such as TheBus, or consider Biki Bikeshare as an eco-friendly alternative.
